On 24th January 2017, Celine Fabrequette, ACP YPN Programme Manager & Sustainable Development Goal5 (SDG5) Expert presented on “Tapping into the potential of the diaspora to invest in Africa’s Young innovation” at the 8th African Union Gender Pre-Summit, part of the AU Heads of State Summit.
This is the second time that the ACP YPN is present at the AU Heads of State summit to share the experiences of ACP youth diaspora in Europe and to create bridges between the continent. Here is the full presentation.
Celine presented how (i) diaspora youth are engaged through the work of ACP YPN and (ii) diaspora youth are interested in the development of the African continent. Harnessing digitalisation and entrepreneurship, and promoting youth rights is key to tapping into the potential of diaspora youth to invest in Africa’s young innovation. In particular, on digialisation and entrepreneurship, Celine recommended that there needs to be diaspora incentive to invest in Africa and this can be harnessed through digital means. For example, we recommend the creation of an online platform for young entrepreneurs would be able to access information in regards to registration procedure in each African country so that they know their rights and obligations.
On youth rights, Celine recommended that effective policy enforcement and implementation can change our realities: African nations can be the example and promote youth-mainstreaming and the active participation of youth and women and girls in the political, economic and social development of the continent in order to achieve the goals of the African Youth Charter, Agenda 2063 amongst others.
Celine concluded with a quote from Nelson Mandela: “Our human compassion binds us the one to the other – not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future.” She underlined that home and away African diaspora and African youth live similar realities – we can build bridges to construct hope for the future: “The diaspora is ready! Are you ready for the diaspora?”
